Welcome to December!!!
This is our first VO Tip of the month!
SOME THINGS TO AVOID
Dairy products such as milk and cheese can cause sinuses to congest. Stay away from theses products when you know you have a VO job.
Also, clearing your throat with a hard and raspy cough might hurt your vocal chords. If you need to do it, you should try progressing from a gentle hum into a slow cough and always be sure to vocalize and put some air across your vocal cords whenever you cough.
Avoid eating before a session, food can cause your mouth to salivate more even hours after eating.
Our last thing to avoid today is to not cover up throat pain. Doing so will not improve your performance and might damage your vocal cords. If you feel you cannot perform you should advise your agent or client so that alternative plans can be made.
Monday VO Tip!
The voice: a wind instrument.
It’s all about breathing. Your voice is a wind instrument and to do any work with your voice you need to learn how to breathe. Allowing you diaphragm to expand when inhaling allows you lungs to expand more completely and fill with a larger quantity of air than if a breath is taken by just expanding your chest. You should be relaxed in order to achieve this. For a performer, correct breathing comes from the diaphragm and not from the chest.
This, as well as everything else in voice over acting, is better achieved with practice.
So go on breathing and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
MONDAY VO TIP!
It´s Monday again! Time for another VO Tip!
Make every time the first time. It is very easy to get tired (and sound tired) on take 24. But take 25 should sound as fresh and real as take 1, or even better.
Unless the producer or director tells you otherwise you should maintain the same energy and attitude for each take, even if you have to record hundreds of them.
Happy week! Happy Monday!
Here is today´s VO Tip!
Your job as a Voice Over actor is to perform to the best of your abilities. When you are hired, from your demo or after an audition, you will not get a second chance after leaving the studio. You are expected to deliver a professional and masterful interpretation after only a short read-through. Usually, it should take 2 or 3 takes to get the job done.
Sometimes the producer or director completely changes the script after hearing it for the first time, and you need to be able to adapt quickly and deliver exactly what the director needs.
The best way of managing these changes is to read out loud all the time so you have a lot of practice! Good luck!
DYLAN BRUNO records VO for Chevy at Elite.
We had another great actor in our studio today! We had the pleasure of recording an ISDN session with Dylan Bruno, who did six VO commercials for Chevrolet.
He portrayed FBI agent Colby Granger in the CBS series Numb3rs and also disgraced former Army Ranger, Jason Paul Dean in fellow CBS series NCIS. He has also done Voice Overs for Bud Light, Bacardi, Sony and Discovery Channel.
He was visiting Miami while filming a Reality Show with his friend, Chef Bun Lai about hunting invasive species and cooking them. We hope this great actor visits us more often!
Nashville star Alexa Peña-Vega ADR´s here!
November is going to bring us a lot of celebrities! This time we had the pleasure of working with the beautiful and very talented Alexa-Peña Vega who visited us with her husband Carlos Peña to record an ADR session for the series Nashville were she plays Kiley.
She is best known for her role as Carmen Cortez in the Spy Kids film series. Also in 2009, she starred as the title character Ruby Gallagher in the ABC Family series Ruby & The Rockits and in 2013, Vega finished work on the films 23 Blast, Machete Kills, Bounty Killer, Wicked Blood, The Remaining and The Hunters which will have release dates throughout 2013 and 2014.
Happy November everyone!
Here’s our VO Tip of today!
Once established that we should do Acting with our Voice, the work should appeal to the target audience. We should adapt our voice over to speak to a particular type of person. If you sound too casual a boardroom of people in suits won´t take you seriously for example. However, if the target is teenagers, the language can use some slang and be very casual. Always try to work with the script to appeal to the audience of your specific work.
